Le Grau du Roi is an ancient fishing village, and still ranks second amongst France's fishing ports. It has been able to survive in part due to post-WWII developments that specifically encourage tourism.

Aigues-Mortes

Aigues-Mortes was a royal port; boats took canals in Grau du Roi up to its fortifications, where they were protected from the open Mediterranean a few kilometres further south.

Crocodile, Nîmes

The crocodile is part of Niimes' city arms. Nimes minted Roman coins, which, to commemorate Rome's victory over Egypt, bore a crocodile chained to a palm tree (symbolizing Egypt's submission to Rome).

Temple de Diane, Nîmes

This edifice's origins are actually unknown, as its construction is not typical of either Greek or Roman architecture. It is nonetheless thought to date back to Augustus' time, and to have served as a library and/or a sanctuary.
