Gabriel Tompkins

I was first introduced to photography by my father as a child. My interest grew to include B&W film and darkroom development, but it remained a sporadic hobby that lingered in the background for years. This changed in 2009 with my first DSLR and I've been continually fascinated by its creative potential ever since.

I think photography represents one of the best gateways to the visual arts for creative people without a traditional background in it. The barrier to entry is low, especially nowadays, and there are so many different directions you can take with it. One of its most important qualities for me is that it helps keep my eyes "young" by reminding me to pay close attention to the beauty and little details all around me. Adulthood seems to bring with it so much distracting mental noise making it easy to lose sight of our surroundings beyond a passing glance. The ongoing pursuit of inspiring pixels helps keep the eyes sharp, legs active and imagination invigorated.
