George Oeser

My photography, in general, isn't about the special or the grand or the extreme. My photography is about the common and the mundane. It's about finding beauty in things that we normally ignore and finding new ways to see and to appreciate the things we believe to be beautiful.
I believe that aesthetics are like religion they are based in societal norms and cultural expectations. We see things as being beautiful or ugly because we have been trained to see them in this way. This training is so effective that we find it difficult to alter how we think about what is worth looking at and what isn't. But these aren't hard and fast rules imposed on us that we have no choice but to follow. We know this because, while an appreciation of beauty is universal, the definition of beauty varies considerably around the world.
I am trying to expand my visual and aesthetic awareness by closely examining as much as I can around me. I want to eliminate the walls that have been placed around my eyes and mind. I want to see the world in the way that a newborn baby sees it. I want to decide for myself what is and isn't worth looking at.
