Gianluca Lombardi

Thanks for stopping by my gallery.
I am a Professional Astronomer, a Traveller, and a Photographer.
I born in Taranto (Italy) on 12 January 1979 and I granted my PhD in Astronomy at University of Bologna in 2009.
I work at the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS Organization in the Canary Islands. Prior to that, I was a Staff Astronomer at La Silla Paranal Observatory in northern Chile for the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Between 2007 and 2010 I have been in charge of the Site Testing Campaigns in northern Chile and Argentina for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) project.
My job gives me the invaluable opportunity to travel all around the World and I take advantage of this to increase my photo collections. I followed my father into amateur photography, fascinated by the world in which films were still developed in the home-made darkroom in the small alcove just downstairs.
The driving concept behind my photographs is to give people the chance to experience the different landscapes and scenery of our planet, and particularly those that are otherwise inaccessible. I always try to express my feelings by capturing the beauty of nature, in particular through landscapes, wildlife, large-scale subjects and starry skies. I am honoured to have the opportunity to share with others what I can see with my eyes.
