Week 1

Published January 5th, 2013

So I got a Canon 60D for christmas, and I'm going to do a 52 weeks project for this year. This first week is really just me messing around with the 60D and getting used to it, I'll have themes and better shots after this week.

Week 4: Long Exposure

Published November 10th, 2012

Went down to the lake and got some shots using my ND filter that is frequently neglected. The lake was really really calm already, so there's barely any of the famous motion blur, but I ended up getting a few cool shots just from going out which is the point of this project.

So, I was going to do a series of long exposures, but the weather meant that the lake was choppy, and that I wouldn't be able to do a bunch of stuff outside cause of the gross. I was also pretty busy this week with school work, so I just did a composite in my room instead and I'll do long exposures some other week.

Went to NYC for the first time. I only took 5 photos cause I was so busy doing stuff with my class. The trip was worth it though, I'm pretty sure I want to go to study there!

Published October 20th, 2012

So, I restarted my project because the books examples are hard to follow at college, and on a daily process.

So this is weekly, and I'm coming up with the themes. But I'll be reading along with the book and possibly posting about it in here.

Darkroom Work

Here's some prints from my work in Photo 101. We had a self portrait assignment. They're not that great, but I like them.

So, I slipped up on my project, but I'll get right back on it in about a week. I'm juggling 3 or 4 projects right now, I had a super busy weekend, and I've got a busy week coming up. I'll likely upload scans of my dark room prints of my Self Portrait project which I'm working on right now. Those should be up by next Thursday, and then sometime around then I'll get back to my personal project.

I hope people are following along with this, I'm trying to make it function almost like a blog, but I'm not quite sure if it's working. Maybe it's more of a journal, just online.

Day 4

Published October 4th, 2012

Day 4 had me take some steps from my front door (Which is weird to determine when you live in a dorm) and then shoot 20 pictures using what's there. It was hard. The end.

There was a bug and some flowers. It was really hard to do this. I do like the window one though.

Rule 3: Watch Your Exposure

Published October 3rd, 2012

So, Day 3, rule 3.

This experiment had you go out and shoot two stops above and below the correct exposure. I cheated a little and just used the auto-braketing feature. Most of the pictures today that I like are actually the correctly exposed image. But I did really like getting out today; fall is awesome.

Rule 2: Your Subject Must Always Be In Focus

Published October 2nd, 2012

So, Here's day two of my new project I'm working on.

The point of today was to break the stigma that your subject must always be in focus.

Again this is all based on the readings in Freeman Patterson's book "Photography and the Art of Seeing" (

Rule 1: Always Hold Your Camera Steady

Published October 1st, 2012

So I'll fill you guys in on my life lately, otherwise this won't make sense.

Since I got to college on August 23rd I haven't really taken any photos for myself, so to get myself back into the swing of actually making photos I've decided to read Freeman Patterson's book "Photography and the Art of Seeing" ( It's a very good book so far, and in it there are "assignments" for you to do. I plan on doing one each day and hopefully this will keep me on track.

I'm not really sure how much of the details of the book I'll be posting along with the story of my images that resulted because I don't want to just freely publish Patterson's ideas. Everyone should go buy the book and do it themselves.

But regardless, here's the first day:

The first day is to get you to break the rule that the camera must always be steady.

Also all these images were brought in through Lightroom and all I did was click "auto" to get the exposure and some contrast fixed.

So I went through the photos from the other day and I tried to spend more time getting a better image. I got a star stacking program for my Mac and did that, then did some more work in photoshop. I'm not sure if it looks to processed or not. I guess technically all the information was there, I just gave it a boost...

Color Shoot

Published July 31st, 2012

My friends who were the primary players in the old "Colors" shoot, that you'll find if you look back the start of my portfolio, wanted to do the same shoot again, with different colors (Some of them), and different location and time and everything. So we did. One of the originals is not longer in town, and the other one couldn't make it, although I'd love to get together with her and do some work. Regardless, the shoot went well. Here are the results, 3 photos to a color, out of I don't know how many total shots taken today.

A few of them don't look that great blow up to full size, That's 100% my fault. The focus was off just enough to be too much for sharpening. It's something that I unfortunately didn't notice until I saw them on my computer screen.

Night Portraits

Published July 6th, 2012

Having never really done many portraits at night I decided to go out with a friend last minute tonight to try something. I didn't really know what I wanted but after fiddling around with a notebook I was using as a prop, and my wirelessly triggered strobe I ended up having the flash bounce off of the notebook so it would look like the light was coming out of the pages.

Attempt at Levitation

So, I've been wanting to try out a levitation photo, so to test my ability to actually do the photoshopping required for what I want to do I set up a little grape sculpture with toothpicks and stuff and then I ended up with this.

Smoke Photography

Published December 25th, 2011

So today I tried out smoke photography. Now, this was fun, because I was under-geared. I just got a flash yesterday for Christmas. It doesn't have a base, and I don't have a wireless trigger. So, How do I get my flash off camera to do smoke photography?

I put it in the hot shoe of my Minolta, and put it in slave mode.

Then I cover my camera's pop-up flash with my hand, directing it towards the flash, and away from the smoke. I did all that in my ice cold garage just for a few images. Why?

This is why:

I think it's really cool that they've got a Blog feature on here! I don't know how often I'll use it. But I'll try to. Most of the photos I just uploaded were from my Flickr account. Only took the better ones. I've got some more to post until I get some good stuff coming up. Expect Fireworks photos in about a week, as our local "Harborfest" is approaching. This summer's been all serious business with me and trying to improve my work, so any feedback is really helpful! Attached are two recent photos.
