Gil Maker

Born in Boston, I have lived in Rochester for the past 40 years. I began my photographic pursuit while attending Syracuse University. The first image I displayed was at the Everson Art Gallery in 1978. I am now a partner at Image City Photography Gallery. I have also exhibited my work at Booksmart Studio, Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame, Casa Italiana, Arts & Cultural Council’s Member Showcase 2011 and 2012 and the Community Darkroom, just to name a few.

I shoot mostly in black and white. Black and white photography is an intriguing art form. Its beauty lies in the timeless appeal that it has. Black and White immediately presents us with a new way of seeing. By taking away the color, the image becomes an artistic interpretation. Visual elements like tone, texture, form and shape are revealed anew, where before they were overpowered by color.

I love Black and White photography because photographs that could be described as ordinary do not fulfill image making. I want to capture the beauty and the soul of the subject. For me, Black and White photography is beautiful and takes us into the world of passion and wonder.
