Born in England and raised in Australia, I now live in Shawnee Kansas with my girlfriend and 2 dogs. My interest in photography began in high school and while the interest has remained ever since, it wasn’t until the digital age removed many of the obstacles of the film-based era that I became more committed to the art.
In 2001 I purchased my first digital camera, an Olympus C-2100 UltraZoom, affectionately known as the “UZI”, it sported a 10x zoom lens and a whopping 2.1 megapixel CCD. Despite it’s low resolution it took very good images, unfortunately many of the photos taken with that camera were lost to a hard drive crash in my laptop. I still have the drive in the hope that some day I’ll be able to afford recovery of the data from the drive. In 2009 I purchased my first digital SLR, a Canon 50D as a 40th birthday gift to myself and haven’t looked back.
Not really sure where to start, I decided that I would couple my love of music with my passion for photography and try my hand at shooting concerts. Armed with my trusty 50D and a 50mm prime lens I set out to capture the excitement of live performance. Talk about a baptism of fire, I knew it would be a challenge and when I look back on my early attempts they were pretty poor, but I persevered and while I still have much to learn I have come a long way and continue to thrive on capturing live performance.
I have recently begun to explore landscape photography, both urban and rural. This genre has also given me the opportunity to explore one of the newer techniques to come out of the digital era, high dynamic range (HDR). I love the intensity of color and depth of texture this form of photography produces.
I’d love to say that I’m able to pay my bills with my work, but alas, I have a “real” job working in IT as a system administrator for a publishing company.
