Five Elements Yoga Shoot

Published February 23rd, 2013

My good friend Mr Joseph Hall and I decided to do a Yoga shoot based around Hindu/Buddhist Five element Theory

Earth - Eagle eye

Two variants of Eagle pose, one with a lesser sidelight, but which catches one eye...

  • February 23rd, 2013
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • 50mm / f/1.8 / 1/250 sec

Earth - Golden Eagle

The other with a much stronger back light to give contrast to the main light.

  • February 23rd, 2013
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • 50mm / f/1.8 / 1/250 sec

Fire - Camel

Camel pose with a fade out. Joseph wanted to show fire energy from the heart and belly, so we used a simple red gel on a side strobe.

This is not a easy pose to hold whilst the photographer tries to work out how he wants to light this - kudos to a very fit and flexible yoga practitioner!

  • February 23rd, 2013
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • 50mm / 1/100 sec

Fire - Prayer Hands with Chakras

Enlightenment! Flare at the crown, glow over the third eye and flare over the heart.

  • February 23rd, 2013
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • 50mm / f/1.8 / 1/100 sec

Fire - Prayer hands with Sunrise

Similar to the previous shot, but just the smallest flare from a rear, gelled strobe.

  • February 23rd, 2013
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • 50mm / f/1.8 / 1/160 sec

Fire - Prayer Hands with Dust Motes

Pushed the exposure compensation and contrast waay up, and these dust motes became visible to the right of his head. Love the ethereal quality they add to the picture.

Aether/Void - Savasana

A simple meditation pose reworked to give an out of body experience!

Water - Upward Facing Dog

Upward facing dog represents water, but we needed more of a theme to this pose, what better than adding a grotto inspired pool?

Water - Bakasana - Crow Pose

Nothing to add here to the amazing strength and form shown here.

Air - Padmasana - Lotus Position

Boosted the background for a little more punch, that is all.

Bonus - Djinn!

Minor photoshopping to hide the eyes, but love the way the forearms came in.

Bonus - Praying to Coltrane

This was just messing about after the shoot, in testing something out, this was originally in red, but made me think of the seminal Coltrane album cover 'Blue Train', so I changed the tint and renamed it.
