After a very successful photography career in the Southeastern United States, Howard Shaffer took more than 30 years away from photography to concentrate on an academic and clinical career in psychology and human services. For almost all of this time, Howard has been a faculty member at Harvard Medical School.
Before pursuing his academic career, Howard displayed photographs in galleries and art shows throughout Florida. His photographs have won many awards, including the well-known Coconut Grove Arts Festival and the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. Howard's work has been featured in fine art exhibitions held at Gallery 5 and Kendall Galleries, both in the greater Miami area. His photograph of a middleweight fighter at the 5th Street Gym is on exhibit at the new Smithsonian Museum of African American History. Since his return to photography, Howard has exhibited his work at the Radisson Hotel, Boston, October 2006, Rio Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, November 2006, the State House, Boston, February 2007, Boston Museum of Science, April 2007, and Boston's St. Francis House & Roxbury Community College Performing Arts Festival, April 2007. His "Expressions of Addiction" exhibit has been touring the United States. The online Expressions exhibit has been viewed by tens of thousands of visitors during its first year (www.expressionsofaddiction.com).
