The magical hair whip

Published October 3rd, 2011

When Erica had asked me to do her photo shoot the other day, I was so excited as it was the beginning of my commitment to photography. I had done it in the past and I let it go because I had to focus on work. After working in a portrait studio for almost 2 years, it slowly started to rekindle my passion for photography

The hard part wasn’t the technical details of HOW to use a camera, what is aperture, exposure, etc., it was simply I want to start at a more creative level from the get go. I started to study other portrait styles from sites such as Flickr and 500px, to help spark my creative mind.

At the very last moment Erica said, “Hey let’s do a photo shoot near the pool.” Of course I didn’t want to turn that down so I said lets do this. With the sun going down in less than an hour, we needed to get as many shots as possible to capture our “golden hour.” As you can tell by the portrait we unfortunately ran out of time. That is when I decided to try and do some action shots.
We tried a variety of different shots from just floating in the pool, to dunking her head in, to splashing the water. Of course there were a lot of close ups as well as there weren’t too many things we can do with the full dress under water with the time that we had left.

Now that I look back I can think of so many more things that I could have done to make this an even more interesting shoot. My advice to others is to not rush photography. Just like painting, pottery, etc., it is an art and you should definitely take your time. The shoot itself did turn out well as there have been many comments and likes on facebook so thank you to all for your support.

Erica was such a good sport and we do plan on doing another photo session with her as well. If you would like to schedule one for yourself you can find me on facebook, Google+, and 500px. There are some great photographers out there, and one day I plan on being one of them.
