Vidal Smith Jr
Vidal Smith Jr. has been involved in the creative arts for most of his life, first as a musician for the past fiftyfive
years and as a photographer since the early seventies.
His formal introduction to photography began when he started teaching at the University of Maryland Dental School in 1973, where he worked closely with the Department of Audio-Visual Aids. Most of his knowledge of photography came from the photographers in the department along with being self-taught. For the next ten years he continued to practice and honed his skills as a photographer in the Washington DC metropolitan area, winning many competitions along the way.
Upon his return to Jamaica, he found himself caught up in the digital platform of photography. This he found to be very exciting as it allowed him to be more creative in producing his photographic images. During his time here, he has won photographic awards in 2010 and 2011 from the JCDC (Jamaica Cultural Development Commission) National Visual Arts Competition.
As he continues his “journey” as a photographer, he tries to capture and enhance the images of the people, places and things around him.
