Jesse Shotland’s website is a trip in itself. The visitor believes that they are an undemanding bystander, looking through the very same viewfinder that Jesse gazed through to encapsulate his shots. The images that he aims to capture, the likeness of the impulsive skateboarder, the mischievous senior citizen, the passionate musician, effortlessly arrest the image in space and time. The image becomes an illustration of life.
He was a born man of the lens. By the age of seven he knew how to use his father’s video camera and seamlessly mastered the art of frame-by-frame storytelling by filming short home-made videos. In addition to his skilled work with the video camera, he taught himself the intricacies of the digital SLR camera and from there it was an ingenious composite of instinctual talent and a solid study of techniques from internet resources.
Jesse has worked in many different mediums of picture making and video design, including music videos, album photography, artist head shots, and product photography. Conversely, through his hard work and experience, he discovered that his genuine passion was in headshots. Yet, they are not simply headshots, but instead character representations. It is difficult for one to define the exact emotion that Jesse encompasses in his carefully crafted images. He credits this influence to not only his natural talent, but also to famous photographers Tom Lowe, David Richter, and Peter Hurley.
