The Power of the Portrait

People offer some of the most interesting landscapes. They are like moving, breathing, talking pieces of art just waiting for a little light and meaning to fashion them into something that is interesting to look at. I have always found it fascinating that often times people want to have their portrait taken, no matter their circumstances. Sometimes I ask, sometimes I offer, and sometimes I take, but I always allow them to see their picture and approve. They have always been gracious, and I wonder if their interest in having their picture taken is somewhat of a need to connect to someone, much like I have the need to connect to them.

Portraits for me have been mainly editorial in nature. Most of my work and travels have taken me to places that were unfamiliar to me, and I think that is what has given me a certain fascination with photographing people in these areas.
