I have loved making photographs since I got my first camera, my grandmother's trusty old Kodak Brownie, when I was 9 years old (the same year that I was introduced to sailing on an M-16 on Storm Lake, Iowa). It is just so magical to be able to capture a moment in time that will never happen quite the same again. And when you hold the photo in your hand you get to relive the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of the moment forever.
I’ve had an wild career path so far: aquatics director at summer camps; pubic school music teacher in Iowa; Captain of sail boats and power boats for ten years in the Florida Keys taking people sailing, Scuba diving, and fishing while I lived aboard a Cal 36; been behind the wheel of a boat in 23 countries; tour manager for incentive travel groups; manager at Walt Disney World for 24 years working with parades, characters, fireworks, shows, and surprisingly: photography. Through it all, making photographs has been a binding passion.
My wife and 18-year old son make our home base in Clermont, Florida, a little bit west of Orlando where we live just up the hill from a beautiful lake which is aptly named: John’s Lake. For the past several years the Lake Eustis Sailing Club has been the epicenter of my sailing where I've found a welcoming group of friendly, fun, and fantastic people who share my passion for getting out on the lake.
