I joined 500px after mounting frustration with flickr, facebook and other photo sharing services. I needed a place where I could start to build a portfolio of work. I'm no full on photographer - actually truth be told a 2 min walk through the photos here on 500px has me in total awe of the level of work here.
On flickr - I can compete with those considered "Good" - here on 500px, I am but a hack, a trigger happy amateur. And that's the difference - flickr is for anyone and everyone. 500px seems to be for those a bit more serious.
BUT is this going to stay this way? I've already seen some "photoshop" creations starting to climb up the ranks here at 500px and I can't say I'm happy with that. Sure use Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture to enhance or edit your photo. But I beg the editors of 500px please do NOT let this become a willy nilly of poorly created photoshop cut n paste images.

So I went out to go to the pub with a mate - who stood me up. As I was leaving home I had this strange gut feeling that I should grab my camera. I did but resisted the urge to take the tripod with me - after all I was going to the pub, not a photo shoot.
I get there and yes, I'm stood up. However while texting my mate, I hear the glorious sound of a V8 engine .. I turn to see the Hot Rod Club arriving and setting up for the night.
I whipped out the camera and started shooting. I was kicking myself for NOT taking the tripod, but was also very glad of the "Hand Held Twilight" mode on my Sony a55 - meaning I could still get some great shots
