Debut of Jacob Furr & The Only Road

Published July 31st, 2012

Recently, I had the chance to attend a performance by my friend Jacob Furr, who has made a name for himself as a talented singer-songwriter here in Fort Worth with a series of solo performances and releases. Now, though, Jacob has assembled a full band, which performs as Jacob Furr & The Only Road.

I expected quality, but I wasn't sure what to expect beyond that. What I got was Jacob's strong songwriting, given new energy by an absolutely rocking presentation and a group of talented, hard-charging musicians that lit up the stage. The show was totally awesome, and I'm super proud of Jacob's hard work paying off like this.

He's working on releasing a recording of the debut performance, and the band will be putting together a studio album for release later in the year. Keep your eye on this band, people.

In addition to Jacob's band, the night saw opening performances by the likewise talented local acts Jake Paleschic and MadrĂ s, whose work was also genuinely great. It was a wonder ...

Karyna Micaela Live at the Thirsty Armadillo

Published June 11th, 2012

Over the weekend, I finally got the chance to see the awesome and very talented local singer-songwriter Karyna Micaela perform live. Karyna and I have been following each other on Twitter for a while now, as we are both ukulele players, and I've been meaning to check out a show of hers. A weekend radio broadcast from the Thirsty Armadillo in the Stockyards was the perfect chance.

Karyna did a great show, playing her uber-catchy brand of old-school vintage pop with jazzy stylings, shifting between the keyboard and her uke. Naturally, I brought a camera. I threw the 45mm f/1.8 lens on my E-P2 and captured a few shots from the audience. I stayed at my table, enjoying an Ugly Pug black lager from Fort Worth's own craft brewery, Rahr & Sons, so I didn't go as crazy with the photos as I often ...

I'm Exhibiting Photos This Weekend

Published May 16th, 2012

If you happen to be in Fort Worth this Saturday, I'd like to suggest that you stop by the Near Southside district just south of downtown and check out the Spring 2012 installment of Arts Goggle, the huge and awesome neighborhood-wide art & music festival. It runs from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM all over the district, with concentrations of activity on Magnolia Avenue, South Main, and Park Place. (You can get the full program right here.)

I have something of another agenda in this recommendation: I'm exhibiting photography! I'll have work on display at the offices of The Starr Conspiracy, a cool marketing firm at 1412 W. Magnolia. They're on the second floor, and the building is right next to everybody's favorite Prohibition-era cocktail lounge, The Usual.

I'm exhibiting along with two fellow Fort Worth photographers: Lou Chapman and Christina Furr. In addition, the awesome local craft brewery Rahr & Sons is providing us with beer for the event. It should be a lot of fun, and I hope ...
