Kirsty Mitchell

Kirsty Mitchell – Artist introduction

Described as a multi-faceted artist, award winning British fine art photographer Kirsty Mitchell draws on her past careers in fashion design and costume making, to produce images of beguiling dream-like worlds all shot in the English landscape surrounding her home. Kirsty describes her approach as ‘Fantasy for Real’ spending months meticulously handcrafting her characters costumes and props to coincide with the bloom of wild flowers, and the seasonal extremes of her local environment.
After graduating from six years of study at The London College of Fashion and Ravensbourne College of Art in both costume and fashion design, Kirsty went on to internships at the studios of Avant grade designers, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan. Her career as a fashion designer continued for over a decade where she specialised in surface decoration and embroideries, working closely with teams in the Far East and India.

In 2008 Kirsty returned to her early love of photography and began a new and deeply emotional connection with the medium during the treatment of her mother’s terminal cancer. Nine months after the tragic loss of her mother, Kirsty immersed herself in what became an unexpected and life changing series entitled ‘Wonderland’, which was intended as a book in her mother's memory. The sudden international recognition for her work led Kirsty to leave her fashion career in 2011 to pursue her future as a fine art photographer. Her work has been published by Vogue Italia, Harper's Bazaar, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The British Journal of Photography and The Royal Society of Photography to name just a few.

In 2013 Kirsty became both the first female and first Fine Art Photographer in Nikon UK’s Ambassador program a role that she continued for two years.
The Wonderland series was completed in November 2014, after more than five years of intensive work. Artworks from the series have since been exhibited in Milan, London, Spain, Amsterdam, Korea and the USA. The collection continues to gain worldwide recognition with pieces being acquired by private collectors and museums, with over 380,000 followers on social media.

In September 2015, after a number of offers from publishers, Kirsty decided to launch her own Kickstarter campaign to create the Wonderland book, in collaboration with esteemed British book designer Stuart Smith. In just twenty-eight days the campaign smashed all records and became the most successfully funded photography project in the history of the crowd-funding website, raising more than £334K with the backing of over 3000 supporters from around the world. The book continued to sell at record speed over the following months and was sold out by January 2016.
In October 2016 the Limited Edition of the Wonderland book was awarded an honourable mention in the Professional Fine Art Book category at the annual International Photography Awards. The competition is judged by some of the most important gallerists and art critics in contemporary photography today.

Due to an overwhelming public demand a 2nd Edition of the book was released in December 2016 and counties to sell all over the world. Reaching the number 1 best seller spot for both photography and fashion books on Amazon.

Kirsty is represented by Modern Contemporary Gallery (formally known as Mead Carney) in London, and The Morren Galleries in Amsterdam. She currently lives and works in England as a full time artist in the Surrey countryside.
