OMD E-M5: Amazing, except....

Published May 11th, 2012

I love this camera. the IQ of Micro 4/3 is finally at the stage where it does not feel like a sacrifice to leave the Nikon (DX) behind. As with any camera, it has a few things that could be improved. I'll only note those I have not seen discussed at length elsewhere.

PROBLEM:

1. There are serious banding issues at ISO 1600 and above with ONLY the Lumix 20mm lens. I tested the 12mm, 12-50mm, 45mm, 100-300mm lenses under the same light conditions as the 20mm (natural and artificial separately). Switching off IS or AF does not change things. I've produced it in two different environments so it is not likely rare interference. Underexposed shadow areas with a uniform white or off-white surface (e.g the corners of a room) seem to most consistently provoke the banding. I have no idea what causes this but it would be nice to get a fix! If it was only 3200+ I wouldn't care, but I do set Auto ISO to 1600 when it is on and some banding does show up there. Set the limit to 1000 if you want to be safe with this (otherwise great) lens.

MINOR ISSUES:
These could be fixed in firmware (or I may have missed them):

1. I want to be able to assign metering and drive functions to any function button. Despite an unbelievable amount of customization options, I can't do that (If I'm missing something, let me know!)

2.With the optional grip installed, the grip dials mimic the control dials. It would be nice to be able to set the now unused dial around the "old" shutter button to a distinct function.

3.When a "Myset" is assigned to a function button, you have to hold the button down. It would be nice to have a "hold" option like is commonly found on AEL/AF buttons.

That is it. Fantastic camera, highly recommended. Just hold on getting a 20mm for it if you don't have one already.
