Diamond Dolls

Published May 29th, 2012

I'm not a documentary photographer by trade. Well, I suppose not in the traditional sense, really. As photographers, we're all documentarians of some sort- recording an instant in time out of an infinite number of possibilities- making that choice to photograph and capture that one moment.

A professor of mine once said that "photography is one of the few things where the processes of conceptualization, composition, and execution can happen in the same instant."

I feel that as a photographer it's important to embody these words and take them with you every time the camera leaves the bag.

Some people can see the photographer in the work even though they themselves are not the subject. Some can place themselves in the photograph and personify the subject and see the scene and situation through their eyes. This series is meant to be a little of both. I was fortunate enough (and maybe crazy enough) to shoot at Diamond Dolls Gentlemen's Club in Daytona Beach, FL for the course of seven weeks. In doing so, I was able to enter the environment with a new set of eyes watching not only the activity on stage, but most importantly the action off stage. It's my first truly focused documentary project meant to pull the viewer in, maybe make them feel a little uncomfortable, a little intrigued, a little surprised, and immersed in the environment.

BTW: the idea is fantastic and the shots are great. a bit depressing (I there was more people in there when you were not shooting, doesn't seem very profitable for the girls to work this small crowd) but ... great shots.

may I ask you a question, as I was thiking of a similar project, but in an entirely different country / 'specific place'? I can get permission from the place's owners. not easy, but possible. how did you get to shoot the people in there without, say, getting shot or getting punched? and did you ever hand them image release forms? that's something I cannot see myself doing. :o(

Hey Carlos. I was able to shoot here by sheer happenstance. I was brought in to do commercial work in the club and simultaneously shot this project over the course of 7 weeks. Since we were in there with all of our video gear, it was quite obvious and fully disclosed to all of the patrons as to what was going on. Amazingly, not one person objected to the video and photography work.

Impressive work! Congrats! You could take this idea and run with it as a long term project

Nice documentation. A good example of "you'd be surprised what the answer may be if you ask permission" as I don't think many strip clubs and/or their patrons are too keen on having their photos taken.
Thanks for sharing these with us.

Thanks Keith. I certainly had some. . . unique privileges. . . in shooting here.
