Mahen Bala

Mahen Bala is a visual documentarian based in Kuala Lumpur. Working with
the medium of photography, film and writing, his works focus on researching,
documenting, and crafting stories on various historical subjects around the
Malaysia.

His past works include a documentation of kopitiam heritage, the old cinemas
of Kuala Lumpur, oral history of Pudu, and the life of the capital’s rivers. His
short documentary on the lost photographs of Almarhum Sultan Ismail
Nasiruddin Shah recently premiered at the ‘Unveiling the Unseen’ exhibition
held at the Islamic Arts Museum.

In March 2017, he will be representing Malaysia on an expedition to Antarctica,
organized by the Foundation of Antarctic Research and the Ministry of
Science, Technology and Innovation. With a supporting grant from Yayasan
Hasanah, he is currently working on Projek Keretapi Kita, a long term project
exploring the history and memories of the Malaysian railway.
