Newbies Are New

Published March 4th, 2011

So I just signed up to 500px and I must admit finding the interface a little weird but I'm getting there! Really impressed with some of the shots people have on here, and totally get why people care making the comparison of 500px is to flickr what vimeo is to youtube. The quality is very high and I hope and can donate to that quality over time!

Thanks to my new followers, I will almost always follw you back and I look forward to becoming an active member in the future!

Hey Matt,

Thanks for your comments, they are definitely helpful. What I take from your blog post is we should improve the first time experience, maybe guide the newly registered people better.

We are in the process of making some changes to the interface and some services that, hopefully, will make it even easier to navigate and make sense of the site.

And we definitely welcome feedback, whatever it might be.

Especially regarding points of improvement, changes, feature requests, etc.

If you ever think of anything you would like to see on the site, or any suggestions or questions you have, email me directly to or to

Hey man! Thanks alot for your effort in welcoming newcomers, I must admit it's very impressive! Though I must admit I feel a little bad making those comments now! What I meant was; I'm very used to updating each of my social networking sites one at a time - uploading photos to flickr, updating my status on twitter and then maybe posting something on the wordpress. Your site is not dissimilar from facebook in the way it accomodates all these interests into one package, except to my delight, it is more focussed on photography than farmville requests! It's just when I signed up there were a lot of options availiable to me and I felt there was a pretty limited 'help' section (just the FAQ unless I'm mistaken?) and it just took me perhaps longer than I'm used to to gain momentum. But as I spend more time engaging with your interface I'm starting to get it, and your tab setup is certainly not confusing, and I didn't mean to criticise it at all!

I'm genuinley looking forward to contributing to this site, and though my content may not be a professional as well... the professionals, I get what you guys are trying to do. And it's awesome :)

Hey Matt, welcome :)

I am wondering about your comments regarding the interface — it is always valuable to hear a fresh perspective on things — what do you find weird, not intuitive, etc?
