Michael McConnell (American, born 1971)
A native of Colorado, Michael has spent his entire career within the print and photography industries. He considers his most important evolution as a photographer to be the experience he gained living in the Netherlands and working for a manufacturer of graphic arts equipment. As International Channel Manager for MacDermid Colorspan, Michael was in charge of the U.K., Ireland, Scandinavia, Finland, and the Middle East. In this position Michael grew to have a great deal of respect for images created by large format film that is later digitized using the best in drum scanning technology. A typical file from an 8x10 inch sheet of film drum scanned at 1200 percent will be around 3 GB. The result is an 8 x 10 ft. print with immaculate definition and quality. Michael returned to Denver in 2002 where he owns and operates his photography studio and Gallery. Widely respected in the commercial field, his focus has been on international industrial and architectural photography.
The personal works of Michael McConnell highlighted at The Michael McConnell Gallery will take the viewer to the places he misses most from his time living in Europe in addition to imagery from the United States and the Caribbean. Michael's alpine work has involved considerable effort. For several images he had to climb 23 hours in mid-winter, high-altitude, avalanche-prone conditions while tugging a 100-pound toboggan and 75 pounds of gear on his back. For one 8-hour exposure he was determined to capture, he had to cross sheer ice cliffs.
His work will also take us to New York City where Michael waited for days for the right light and contrast in order to attain a double exposure. Probably the most unique attribute of Michael's work is his command of state-of-the-art digital printing resulting in tack sharp, grain-less prints with frame sizes over 10 feet.
