Nate Welk

Nate Welk is an emerging new artist who is completely self-taught in all aspects of digital photography. Photography started as a hobby early in Nate’s life and developed into his career three years ago. Nate takes his inspiration from the plains of North Dakota and the rural areas of the country. His work has been exhibited at Fargo’s Plains Art Museum, Mandan’s Harvest Brazilian Grill, NDSU’s Memorial Union Gallery, Bismarck Downtown Artist Cooperative Gallery and the Bismarck Art & Galleries Association.
His mother recounts the story of Nate using a vacuum cleaner attachment as a camera when he was two years old. From this first “camera” to the photos he shoots today, Nate’s passion for photography has always been part of his life.

Artist Statement
I am currently exploring the simplicity of black and white photography. I seek a feeling reminiscent of the beginnings of photography in the finished product, while in the creative process I embrace the now by capturing my images digitally. These images explore the rural roots of America in areas often seen as flyover country for people from the coasts.
I am often asked where individual images where taken, I am glad to answer but I am more interested in how the image influences the person. What does the observer feel, what do they think the image imparts.
“We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are.” Anais Nin
