Salinas De Santa Pola - archaeology, industry and biodiversity in valencia

Published July 30th, 2012

The Parc Natural de les Salines de Santa Pola in the valencia region of southern spain represents an intriguing area for biodiversity conservation. The area harbours a wealth of diversity, and saline lagoons such as these are special habitats particularly for wading birds, invertebrates and salt tolerant plants. However, Salinas De Santa Pola is more than just a saline lagoon, it is an industrial scale salt producing lagoon, to see biodiversity and exploitative industry side by side like this is rare, and industry that is actually positive for biodiversity is rarer still.
