Nicola Bernardi

Nicola Bernardi is a photographer whose life changed entirely once he discovered that, by simply having his camera by his side, all the people around him turned from being total strangers to becoming stories, waiting to be told.
He was born in Casale Monferrato, Italy, where he managed, one way or another, to fight boredom and graduate from high school. He then quickly jumped on a train and moved to Venice, choosing to study Oriental Languages because, let’s face it, he really wasn’t cut for science.
It wasn’t until he moved to Sapporo, after graduating in Japanese, that he stumbled upon photography: it became his obsession from the get go.
On January 1st 2011, he decided to commit himself to taking the best possible photo every day for a year and started a project 365. Incredibly, despite studying, working and playing drums, he managed to dive into his obsession and complete the project, all while working as a phtographer in the wedding and advertising industry. On January 1st 2012, his mind was set : “Hey dad, we had a change of plans. I want to be a photographer.”
He then moved to Rome, where he had the pleasure of assisting for two years his favorite photographer in the world, Eolo Perfido, and worked with other talented photographers such as Susi Beliaska throughout Europe.
In march 2014, along with his best friend and cartoonist Simone Albrigi, a.k.a. Scottecs, he cycled the length of Japan over three months and told the story of their travels through photos and comics.
Right after that, he assisted Steve MccCurry in Ethiopia in shooting the 2015 Lavazza Calendar.
Since July 2014, he’s based in Melbourne, Australia, living and working as a freelance photographer.

He is madly in love with people and their uniqueness. His portraits speak of a great range of subjects, from strangers in the street to various artists in every stage of their careers, that he portraits with a great deal of character and color.
His first photoshoot with the make up artist Ollie Savage gave birth to [White Pt.2] a photo that got to the finals of Sydney’s Head On Photo Festival 2015, and since then has been exhibited in Melbourne, New York and New Dehli.
In November 2015 he worked again with Ollie Savage and shot a new project, called [24], where they set out to shoot 24 photoshoots with 24 different people in 24 hours consecutively.
Currently, the project is in post production and will be first exhibited in Melbourne around march.

Nicola weirdly resembles a big thumb with a goatee and hates writing his own bios.
He wakes up every given morning with a big smile on his face, because he does what he loves most.
