Nick van de Wiel

Hi everyone! Although I started photography about a decade and a half ago, I am relatively new to 500px. Hope you like my work! If you do, please join me on one of my photographic workshops through Southern Africa. More info on

I am a specialist nature and photographic guide based in St. Lucia Estuary, South Africa. Trained as a biologist as well as safari guide, I revel being in the bush, and if possible, with a camera in hand! Although I started of as a Wildlife Photographer, as my photography matured I moved more and more towards Landscape Photography. I love the meditative aspect of Landscape Photography: It is all about 'seeing & recognising beauty' in nature and the only way I will 'find it', is by being in the present moment. Then 'crafting the image', trying to capture the emotion of the moment in the available light, in order to create a most beautiful still photograph that speaks for itself, and that has the eyes of viewers linger on for a while.
In my wildlife photographic work, I aim to capture not perse action, but rather emotion. I am not the 'spray and pray' type of photographer, and you'll find me seldom on a 'continuous shooting setting'. For me, also here it is all about 'seeing', breathing in and out, trying to capture just that moment emotion shows through in the behaviour of the animal. Not by 'luck' and pressing the shutter button until the buffer fills up. On the contrary; you'll find me retaining my calmness even in the heat of the moment, and take one or two, maybe three well thought out shots.

I love using 'old' lenses that have only manual focus and an old fashioned aperture ring. It adds to the challenge, and using these I can truly feel that 'I' took the photo, not a piece of technical equipment. For me, it adds to the satisfaction somehow. Going out, seeing beauty, crafting composition, using technical ability to work manual gear, only then pressing the shutter, that is what artistic photography is all about!
