Malixe Photo

Malixe discovered photography as a high school freshman, and after reading his way through the entire Time-Life Library of Photography series, was smitten. Particular influences include Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibovitz, and Weegee. His first camera was a german Praktica LTL bought from the Sears catalog with money from a summer job working as an intern at his small-town weekly newspaper.

After high school, Malixe took a 10-12 year hiatus from photography, with the challenges of making his way in the world, a broken camera, and no money to repair or replace it. Eventually he caught the bug again, walked into a local pawn shop and bought a Pentax K1000 and lens for $75 and never looked back.

Malixe is a people and event photographer. Occasionally he indulges in some urban landscapes, but pictures of flowers, kitties and mountains just don't do it for him. One of the other reasons for his decade-long break from photography was that he was too shy to ask people to pose for him or inject himself into situations where photo opportunities presented themselves. Fortunately he (mostly) grew out of that.

Malixe likes shooting with self-aware people and he has found that those who have had to struggle against and break through social norms and conventions to discover and define themselves are some of the most self-aware people in the world. He enjoys working with people who are musicians, performers, members of alternative lifestyle communities, artists, or are just interesting to him. Favorite subjects are burlesque performers, aerialists, leather folk, gothic, steampunk and fetish models, queer or transgender individuals, pro dommes like Mistress Matisse (seen at the top of my profile page) and 'radical marching bands' like Chaotic Noise Marching Corps, Environmental Encroachment and others like them who perform at Honk Festivals around the country.

Malixe was a founding member of the Seattle Erotic Art Festival and was on the planning committee for the event for its first eight years. His work was accepted into the festival through the competitive 'Blind Jury' process, in five of the eight years. He is also a recipient of the 2006 'Behind the Scenes' award from Generic Leather Productions of Washington (GLPW), a Leather Emerald Community Service recognition award from the Washington State Mr. Leather Organization (WSMLO) in 2015, and a lifetime honorary membership in Seattle Men in Leather (SML) for his work on leather title contests.
