Paul Bennett

Most of my life and the decisions within it, have been brought about by my one true passion; climbing. Photography is no exception.

My love for the Peak District came about from making repeat weekend trips whilst young to go climbing on the Gritstone outcrops surrounding Sheffield. It's therefore no surprise, that when it came time to pick a University, Sheffield was top of my list for no other reason than its proximity to the place I wished to spend the majority of my days. I moved here (Sheffield) in 2003 and as yet I have no desire to leave. The Peak District is one of the best playgrounds a climber could hope for, with rock aplenty and enough variation to keep even the keenest climber happy for a life time (and there's plenty for a Photographer too).

In 2009 circumstances arose that allowed me to travel for 6 months, doing nothing other than visiting some of Europe’s best climbing areas. Before leaving I bought my first DSLR and my interest in photography grew with every new venue I visited. On returning to the UK I directed my new-found interest and enthusiasm into reading everything and anything I could on the subject and discussing (at length) anything I hoped to improve with a number of highly talented Sheffield-based photographers (who I thank for their willingness to share their hard earned knowledge and of course, their time).

Discovery of the Strobist blog (www.Strobist.com) led me to explore the power of small flash units and the creativeness that goes hand in hand with moving them off-camera. This opened up a new realm of possible subject matter (and a personal love of studio style Portraiture).

More recently I have been focussing on making the most out of the landscape I often frequent whilst climbing, and using small-flash techniques to improve light in the absence of stunning ambient.

If you are interested in one of the images shown in this portfolio or you would like to discuss a photography project (of any scale) please don't hesitate to use the Contact page.

Thanks,
Paul
