NEW ARIZONA GUIDEBOOK BY LOCAL AUTHORS WINS MULTIPLE INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARDS

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Arizona-based co-authors Paul Gill of Phoenix and Colleen Miniuk-Sperry of Chandler have taken home top honors in two international book competitions for their recently published guidebook, “Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona’s Wildflowers, A Guide to When, Where, and How.”

The 2012 International Book Awards has named their new travel guide as the Winner in the Best Nature Photography Book and Best Interior Design – Non-Fiction categories. Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of JPX Media Group, explains, “The 2012 results represent a phenomenal mix of books from a wide array of publishers throughout the world.” In its third year, the JPX Media Group of Los Angeles recognized print, e-books and audio books in over 100 categories.

The book was also named a Finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the Best Overall Design and Best Travel/Travel Guide categories. Miniuk-Sperry independently published the book through her Chandler-based company, Analemma Press, and therefore qualified for entry in the prestigious awards program established in 2007 to recognize and honor outstanding independently published books in 60 different categories.

“These awards truly honor the team effort between not just Paul and I, but also our editor - Chandler resident Erik Berg – our focus group members, families, sponsors, retail partners, supporters, everyone who contributed to this book coming together.” Miniuk-Sperry says of the accolades.

Miniuk-Sperry and Gill’s book \"Wild in Arizona: Photographing Arizona\'s Wildflowers, A Guide to When, Where, and How\" (Analemma Press, 2012) is a 224-page guidebook packed with 60 descriptions of the most beautiful spots to see wildflowers across Arizona. Peter Ensenberger, the former Director of Photography at the Arizona Highways magazine, describes it as \"packed with vital information and tips on the best places to find and photograph Arizona\'s bountiful blooms.\"

“We all lead such busy lives, it’s so important we savor opportunities to enjoy the natural world,” Miniuk-Sperry suggests. “With our book, we hope to help people discover little-known places to experience breathtaking scenery within Arizona with their friends and families while giving them the best chance to see wildflowers at the right time.”

After a 10-year career at Intel Corporation, Miniuk-Sperry left her software project management job in 2007 to pursue outdoor photography and writing full-time. Her work has been published in National Geographic calendars, the Arizona Highways magazine, books, and calendars, AAA Highroads, Mushing Magazine, Smith-Southwestern calendars, and a broad variety of other publications. She also leads photography classes for the Arizona Highways Photography Workshops, Arizona Wildlife Federation, Through Each Others Eyes, and numerous private workshops.
Since 1975, Gill has turned all of his attention to photographing the grandeur of nature. Gill’s photographs have graced the cover and pages of the world-renowned Arizona Highways magazine, calendars and books, Natures Best, Smith-Southwestern calendars and postcards, and many other scenic publications, calendars and books. His work has also been displayed in numerous fine art galleries and several pieces are featured within the Smithsonian Museum’s permanent collection of nature photography.
