tulips

Published March 2nd, 2013

Living in Turkey gives one a chance to appreciate the tulip. The Ottomans were great cultivators of this harbinger of springtime.

In ancient Persia, to give a red tulip was to declare your love. The black center of the red tulip was said to represent the lover's heart, burned to a coal by love's passion.

To give a yellow tulip was tantamount to declaring your love hopelessly and utterly.

The last years have seen a revival of the tulip here in Istanbul. I love the arrival of spring and the chance to get out and walk in the parks.

West Coast

Published March 2nd, 2013

To me, the west coast of Canada is the place I feel most grounded, most connected to the Earth. I love the damp smell of a cedar forest after the rain. I love the pounding surf of the ocean, and the thought of looking across, past the horizon line, to Japan. I love the myriad of things that grow and thrive here, in the wet warmth of the temperate rain forests of the Pacific coast.

I live in a lucky place. Lucky because of many reasons.

It's a quiet place, in a massive city.

It's a place with millions of people, but I have privacy.

And, I have views, day and night of the Bosphorus, the lifeblood of Istanbul.

And, I am lucky because the way the apartment sits gives me a fantastic view, both day and night. Morning and evening.

These are some shots from morning and evening.

Antalya Harbour

Published February 28th, 2013

This is a place I have loved since day one. And day one, well, it dates back to about October of 2003. I love it in all the seasons of the year, all times of the day. But perhaps my favourite time is evening. I love the light, the clean water, the boats that come in and out full of tourists and pulsating with the latest pop song. I love how there are still fishermen here, working on their boats and nets, or the fishermen who try their luck from the shore.

It's a place full of light and life. Invites photography and invites one to sit down and watch the world go by, with or without a camera.
