Colonies of ants will 'farm' aphids which feed on vegetation. The aphids secrete a sugar rich substance known as honeydew which the ants will collect from the abdomen of the aphids. In return for this honeydew, the ants will guard the aphids against predators. Ants have also been known to bite off the wings of the aphids to prevent them flying off and chemicals released by the ant prevent the regrowth of the wings.
