An athlete rows in her sleek single scull as the sun sets over Lady Bird Lake in Austin, TX.

Every evening this man-made lake, a dammed section of the Colorado River, is filled with kayaks, canoes, and sculls, even on the hottest day of the year.

Formerly referred to as Town Lake, Lady Bird Lake was renamed in 2007 in honor of the late Lady Bird Johnson, former First Lady of the United States, who spent many of her years as an Austin resident dedicated to the development and beautification of the recreational areas along the Colorado River. Her efforts were strong force in the cultivation of the youthful and athletic culture Austin is now well known for.

The spectacular orange light of the setting sun is owed, in part, to the large cloud of Saharan dust that is blown by the trade winds across the Atlantic ocean from West Africa every summer.
