Giovanni Cernogoraz (born 27 December 1982 in Koper) is a Croatian sports shooter.[4] Competing in shotgun events, Cernogoraz won the Olympic gold medal in men's trap in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.[5][6][7]
He started the sport at an early age and has had many notable achievements since. His ambition was to compete at the Olympics. After narrowly missing 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Cernogoraz managed to qualify for 2012 Olympic Games after winning the ISSF World Cup in Beijing in 2011. He was elected as a sportsman of Velika Gorica in 2011[8].
He earned two gold medals in individual and team trap at the 2012 European Shotgun Championships in Larnaca[9].
At the 2012 Olympics he managed to qualify for the Olympic final in sixth place with score of 122. In the final, Cernogoraz scored 24 out of a possible 25, with a total score of 146. With the score of 146, Cernogoraz equalled the Olympic record and secured a shoot-off for the gold. In the shoot-off, Cernogoraz defeated Massimo Fabbrizi and won the Olympic gold.
He lives in Istria, in the town of Novigrad. He is an Istrian Italian and holder of an Italian passport. At the press conference in Olympics, he explained that he competes for Croatia but that in the past had thought about changing sports federation.[3]
His hobbies are swimming, running and hunting.
