THE SOUTHERN ROUTE
From the series "Himalayan Chaam"
Return today on my old "speciality": the Buddhist Chaam dance. I invite you to the Takthok monastery, in the Ladakhi Himalayas. You attend an intellectual trance, which is no a paradox as it sounds. The monk put so much focus on the meaning of each gesture, so much heart in the symbolism of each step, as much thoughts, signifiants, introspections as Kierkegaard writing"the concept of irony", that, to the end, he attains a trance state. It's the same goal, and purpose, than a sufi Dervish dancing to reach the highest levels of consciousness. A physical churning of the mind to experience the metaphysics. The Buddhist monk uses the theatrical performance while the Islamic Sufi employs the physical vertigo as catalyst. The man on this portrait is beyond reach, yet so close to us. An unsettling experience.
