A full-frame, composed in camera, capture of the juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), who is a frequent visitor to our garden. The red cap covering the head, common to all GSW juveniles,is beginning to recede. Males retain a red patch at the nape of the neck, whilst females do not. Time will tell to see whether this youngster is male or female, though my feeling is female.
