Rainbow Lorikeets visit for Breakfast

This pair of Rainbow Lorikeets came to visit us while my wife and I were eating breakfast at the Thala Resort near Port Douglas (Australia), on our honeymoon in April 2009. Thala has an amazing open air dining area that is in the tree canopy and allows the wildlife to approach within a few meters of your table. A wonderful experience and a great way to start the day.

The Rainbow Lorikeet is a medium sized parrot with a weight that varies from 75–157 g. The plumage is very bright with the head a deep blue and with a greenish-yellow nuchal collar, the rest of the upperparts (wings, back and tail) are deep green. The chest is red with blue-black barring.

Rainbow Lorikeets often travel together in pairs and occasionally respond to calls to fly as a flock, then disperse again into pairs. Rainbow Lorikeet pairs defend their feeding and nesting areas aggressively against other Rainbow Lorikeets and other bird species. They chase off not only smaller birds such as the Noisy Miner, but also larger and more powerful birds such as the Australian Magpie.

Taken with a 5d MkII, a 70-200mm 2.8 lens and 1.4x teleconverter.
