This is the result of months of effort scoping out different locations with my girlfriend Chelsea (http://500px.com/ChelseaMercadoKnowles) and my friend Kris Rowe (http://www.flickr.com/photos/coastalconn/), studying osprey behavior, correlating their fishing with the time of day, tides, and winds, and waiting for those factors to align with the conditions we needed for a great picture: closeness to our stand and nice lighting.

Finally, under nice light with the wind blowing in the right direction (they always take off into the wind), this older osprey struck close enough to the shore for me to get the detail I wanted.

If you're interested in flying birds, check out Chapter 9 of my book, Stunning Digital Photography, available in print and e-book forms at Amazon. If you have an iPhone or iPad, look it up in iBooks--the iPad version is amazing. I'm going to add this picture as an example to the book.
