Lenticular clouds ("hogsbacks" as they are called in New Zealand) are not uncommon in the area around Aoraki/Mt. Cook. During my previous stay in NZ I witnessed a similar cloud formation - but unfortunately the whole sky above was covered in clouds. This time the rest of the clouds and the sun cooperated.
This image was captured a few minutes past sunset, when the intense colors of the fading sun reached the spectacular clouds, making them glow pink.
