Turimetta Beach, Sydney's Northern Beaches.

I was nearing the end of my tether as a 3 hour shoot came to a close with this shot. Finally, after weeks of waiting, we got clouds. More clouds than I could poke a stick at. Or lens, for that matter. But the rain finally did us in, and I had left my umbrella at home. Driving back, it took my girlfriend Tatiana a fair while to thaw out. The light had been both good and bad, and it was a bugger to control as the sun streamed intermittently through the fast-moving storm clouds as they headed up the coast.

We had arrived an hour before sunrise, and attempted some light painting with torches, guessing the focusing distances. A little later on I nearly lost it when 2 photographers, all gear and no brains, walked nonchalantly through my shot right in front of my tripod on the beach. They were about to do the same to Tatiana when I called out with some few choice words and stopped them in their tracks. A few more choice words and they detoured around behind her. I mean, for chrissakes, they were literally right in front of her camera and she was obviously taking a shot.

Later still, another 2 photographers showed up. They also walked into my frame, but quickly retreated and apologised once they saw me. They turned out to be decent guys, albeit Nikonites, and we had a chat. It was their first time to Turimetta and they were blown away by the setting. Their only problem was they had arrived at the same time as us – 5.30am – except at the wrong headland. Even so, they got the best light, as the sunrise didn’t actually occur.
So, the largest “crowd” on the beach this morning were photographers. Some of us knew the Code of Etiquette, others didn’t. At least we avoided the camera club crowd.
