Early in the morning I arrived at this picturesque little harbor to catch a zodiac out to some of the best snorkeling spots along the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Before boarding the boat, I asked the captain if the sun would set behind the trees in this shot. She replied that it would set further to the north this time of the year. I was disappointed by her answer, but I had a hunch that she might be wrong. That evening I returned to this bay with my camera and tripod and was thrilled when I saw the sun setting behind these beautiful palm trees. The lesson here is to trust your intuition.

This was shot at Keauhou Bay, which is south of Kailua-Kona. To get here, take Alii Drive south and turn right at the stoplight (Just past the entrance to the Keauhou Shopping Center) onto Kamehameha III Road. This road ends at the bay. Park your car and walk across the sandy volleyball courts, then cross the small parking lot and walk out onto the dock. You'll see these trees on the right side of the bay as you look out to the ocean.
