This lovely little character is a baby Siamang, born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo (KKOZ) and is now about three months old. Siamang are the largest of the Gibbon family – Gibbons being apes, NOT monkeys ;^) - and, to my eye, the most beautiful of all!

Some of you may recall the first photo I shared of him with his mother when he was just four days old in a post I titled Tender Moments.

Like the White-Cheeked Gibbons I shared with you yesterday, the Siamang's existence in the wild is seriously threatened through deforestation, hunting and poaching.

While I'd love to live in a perfect world were animals were left in peace to enjoy their lives in their natural habitats without any need whatsoever to have them in captivity, of course our world is far from perfect. Which is why I appreciate the wonderful management and staff at KKOZ so much, as the excellent care and attention they provide for their animals plays a vital role in conservation of some of the most endangered species we have, evidence of which is apparent by the frequency this amazing zoo sees successful births among so many different species.
