Asep Stone Experience (CH)
It's not just Elvis who still lives, Jimi Hendrix is among us as well, personified into one of the best musicians that ever honored the work and spirit of our favourite guitar god, keeping the fire burning bright. Damn near reincarnated in Asep Stone and his band, The Asep Stone Experience (Asep Stone g, v; Ivo Bucher b; Lukas Meyer d).
Asep was born in Bandung, Indonesia and to be sure, the Hendrix bug got him early, real early: After teaching himself on guitar, he played his first gig at age
14 in front of 20'000 screaming souls at the Bandung Gladiator Rock Festival. Not a bad way to start and get your mojo going, and after playing around in
Indonesia for a while, he took on London in 1993. London, the city that was probably the most welcoming to Hendrix, his art and his personality and had he
made it to 70, we're sure he'd be celebrating his birthday there this year.
Same place, Asep formed the band Stone Free, did some of his own writing and toured England, honing his skill. Next, in 1999, he formed the Hendrix tribute
band Purple Haze, and engaged Jimi's original bass player, Noel Redding. Which created enough attention for the BBC to beam a live concert of the group,
coinciding with an auction of Hendrix's guitars. The collaboration with Noel was tragically shortlived; the bass player died unexpectedly. Purple Haze kept on touring but nevertheless, reached the end of the road in 2004.
Wanting to keep the spirit alive elsewhere, Asep moved to Switzerland, cooly put together the Asep Stone Experience, which was making waves on the shores of our lake, raising eyebrows and unclogging an equal number of ears. It became a musical grass roots movement, and in the process, along with increasing his writing, Asep and his band's song repertory also grew, citing the additional influence of the music of Muddy Waters, B.B.King, T-Bone Walker and Johnny Winter.
