THE SOUTHERN ROUTE
From the series "New York by the bird"
Yeap, Manhattan today, with the Slab, aka 30 Rock. The majestic Rockefeller building. I can't get enough of this one (as well…). You embrace here almost all the Rockefeller center neighborhood. Did you know that the land was just rented out by the Columbia university till 1985? Anyway, you watch there the whole development of this project. First, in the middle, the 14 "small"Art Deco buildings from the 1930's with the huge GE building (1933), built under the vision of Raymond Hood. Then, in the 70's came a row of four skyscrapers (just three present on this photo) along the 6th avenue, in Modernist style, from Harrison & Abramovitz. Not to forget a 5th building (visible here), just behind the Slab, as well from the same style and firm. From left to the right:
1. McGraw-Hill building, 1966
2. Exxon building, 1971
3. Time & Life building, 1958
4. Sperry-Rand building, 1963
The difference in the scale increases the feeling of dynamism and strength, and you can feel it strongly from this altitude. By the way, where am I? Do you see the roof in the foreground? Well, it's the MetLife building [Brutalism, 1963, 808 ft (246 m) by Emery Roth], so if you know a bit New York, you understand my position. Exactly right above Grand Central. You can't hove so low above this place more than a few seconds, otherwise your helicopter is banned from the New York city air space. As a photographer you have to take some risks. I'm joking: it was hell of a fun.
