Finally! This was a shot I’d been after for awhile and I’m pretty excited I captured it.

We arrived at Ritch Grissom Wetlands early in the morning and came upon this guy. I set the tripod and got into position, just watching his behavior. He wasn’t really fishing anymore, so I knew the next move would likely be to another hunting area.

As I watched, he stretched his neck and wobbled it back and forth, gauging the wind speed and direction. I tightened the grip on the camera and rechecked the focus for the 10th time. Any second now…

Come on…

Come on…

It happened amazingly fast too – in less than a second, he reared down and exploded from the water.

I ripped off the photo as quickly as I could and managed to capture this image. I took a quick look at the image on the back of the camera and I wanted to leave for the day right there and then! The rest of the morning was still spent shooting, but man, what a way to start!
