Lily putting on her shoes in the genkan, before catching the bus to school.

A genkan is an entrance to a Japanese home, where you leave your shoes before entering. By the same token, the toilet is often situated near the front door so that all the ‘dirt’ is kept away from the main living area.

'Indoor only' shoes can be worn in the home, but separate slippers are provided for exclusive use in the toilet.
