This is a close-up shot of one of the detailed metallic panels on one of the doors at Usa Jingu (Usa in this case is not an abbreviation for the United States. Read it as “oo-sah”). While this panel is probably a replacement less than 80 years old, the style of it was devised in the 8th century. The power of art and fine craftsmanship to endure the wear and tear of history always fascinates me. This photo is a tribute to that ancient designer. His / her work continues to be appreciated centuries after it was first conceived.
