The giant antpitta has been on the endangered species list but at the present time it is listed as vulnerable. I t has been found in less than tem places and only in Colombia and Ecuador. It is a giant perching bird and is rare and somewhat enigmatic. The name itself suggests a large bird approximately 9/5 to 11 inces and weighting about 300 grams or 10.8 oz. It's back , wings and stubby tail are dark olive green in color while the top of the head is a pale to medium grey. The rest of the plumage is a rufous brown. The throat and breast feathers are edged in black. The bill is dark, heavy and strong and their eyes are dark as well while the legs and feet are a grey color.
Because of logging and deforestation the giant antpitta has dropped considerably in number and they are now trying to protect the few places that they now call home. A beautiful beautiful bird found deep in the forests of the Andes.
