I snorkeled with more turtles off the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii than I have ever swam with anywhere else in the world. On land sea turtles look heavy and awkward, but in the water they float like angels. After a week of exploring coral reefs with these gentle creatures, the stresses of my life on the mainland had all been washed away by the rhythm of the ocean’s waves.
This shot was taken at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, which is located off of highway 11 just southwest of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
