I think I've held off on sharing this image for almost a year because I'm committed to improving upon it this coming winter (or however many it takes). But for the time being, it is my most straightforward and detail rich record of one of the most fascinating phenomenons I have ever witnessed.

The photo shows intricate details in the surface of glacial ice deep inside a cave during a cold spell. As far as I have been able to tell, these rippled patterns only form after prolonged low temperatures, and then, only far below the surface. Ice near the opening of the same cave would be smooth as glass.
