It took me a few days to plan this shot, while I was still in the UAE. My good friend Anze Vishnar, a Bled native, sent me an amazing collection of scouting photos, each one identified on a Google Map. I was spoilt for choice.
It was up to me to pick the most suitable time of the day for each of the shots I had pre-selected well in advance.
For this particular frame, my aim was to have the church
illuminated with a low-angle light, coming from its left side. 'The Photographer's Ephemeris' (fantastic application which I highly recommend to any serious landscape photographer) told me that I would have to take this picture at dawn.
Problem was getting access to this vantage point. It happens to be the an outdoor terrace of the overlooking Bled Castle which opens up to the visitors at 8AM...too late for my intentions. Anze, as usual, solved this by speaking to the castle's caretaker the day before who opened the gate for us at dawn.
The weather did not collaborate with me during the few days I spent at Bled. Air was hazy every day, sunlight was very murky and clouds weren't anywhere in sight. I even cancelled the aerial shoot of Bled which was arranged for me on the aircraft of the Slovenian Air Force plane (don't ask) because the haze was too intense. That was extremely disappointing.
It was no different on the morning when I took this shot; the air was dense and hazy. This doesn't happen that often in this Slovenian alpine jewel. But I wasn't going to waste all this effort and planning so I snapped a few shots.
When I looked at the images on my computer back in Abu Dhabi, I realized that there's no such thing as a bad light or a bad vantage point in this magical place. No matter how it lights this lake up, it's always manages to surprise you.
This digitally blended photograph turned out much better than I expected and I'm very happy to share it with all of you.
